Washoe Meadows State Park
Bakersfield , Dry Meadow and East Meadow Dead Tree Removal Project
California State Parks and Lake Valley Fire Protection District are working together to protect communities at risk to wildfire by reducing hazardous forest fuels and improving native forest composition and structure at Washoe Meadows State Park.
The communities at risk to wildfire targeted by this project include Meyers residential neighborhood, Meyers School , Amacker Ranch and Sawmill Road . This 46 acre project will take place in 3 strategic locations targeting dense stands of dead and suppressed trees, accumulations of surface fuels and dense stands of dead and dying trees located next to residential structures.
Treatment will take place on upland areas, dry Stream Environment Zones (SEZ), and SEZ edges. Tree removal and removal of forest biomass from non-SEZ areas will be accomplished by mechanized equipment over relatively dry conditions to prevent soil impacts. Areas of wet SEZ will be avoided by heavy equipment and will be thinned of hazardous fuels by a hand crew thinning trees and stacking slash piles for burning.
Mechanical treatment, implemented by a private contractor, and hand crew work shall be preformed in accordance with Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board.
Work will begin by the first week in November 2009 and end by October 15, 2010.
